Today we’re going to talk about that magical period in a company’s growth when it takes off like a rocket. It goes from small to big in a matter of a couple years. The company sales chart looks like a hockey stick. This phenomenon is called network marketing momentum.
If you have ever watched a network marketing business opportunity presentation, you are probably familiar with the notion of network marketing momentum.
Network marketing companies and their representatives will often trot out an S-curve diagram, showing the “optimal” time to join an opportunity.
Oddly enough, you are always getting in at the perfect time.
You’ll be told that the “best” time to join a network marketing opportunity is after the company is 2 years old but before it reaches “critical mass”, which is cited at $50 million in annualized sales.
The first time I saw this graph was in a Nuskin presentation back in the late 80’s. It’s been used widely ever since.
My argument isn’t with the numbers.
I’d have to do a ton of research to document company success and failure over the years to make an argument as to the accuracy (or lack) of the numbers used.
For all I know, from a company standpoint, they might be entirely valid.
How does it matter to you?
My argument is that these numbers have very little to do with you and your business.
The fact is that for the individual, this argument claiming that you want to get in on a company as it enters “momentum”, so that you can take advantage of that growth is nonsense.
A lie.
Marketing BS.
What angers me about all of this is that people will recruit using this hype and folks will get seduced into believing that just because they signed a distributor application at a particular time in the company’s history, it will be easy to build a business.
This plays into the “get-rich-quick” mentality that has plagued this industry for so long.
It’s a load of crap.
Network marketing momentum is caused by a lot of people joining a program and moving large volumes of product.
This is a great thing.
Once an organization hits a tipping point (or critical mass), it does start growing exponentially.
Here’s the part the hypesters neglect to tell you:
If that growth doesn’t happen under you, it doesn’t matter whether the company experiences MLM momentum. You won’t.
The secret is…
No matter what the company does, you still have to do the work to grow your network marketing organization.
If you don’t, you will not have the success you were promised.
The company and even your sponsor may well experience network marketing momentum, but you will not.
You need to build your group
You need to build your group, starting with person number 1 (that’s you) and growing from there.
The company’s momentum will not create a group for you.
So when they trot out the line that “We’re just going onto momentum! Join now and you’ll get rich!”.
Smile.
Know that you’re being hyped.
It may still be a company you want to join, but don’t do it based on the promise of someone else’s network marketing momentum.
Make sure you are convinced you will be able to create your own.
I’m rooting for you.
