Welcome to the 2nd episode of Mindset Monday.
Who do you want to become?
Earl Nightingale said, in his classic recording The Strangest Secret, that we become what we think about. Mr. Nightingale was a pioneer in the self improvement field, a great speaker and entrepreneur. He has taught more people how to be better and more effective than perhaps any of the gurus practicing today. His notion of positive thinking is repeated and retaught by legions of his followers.
And on this point, he was wrong.
We do not become what we think about. We become what we do.
Thinking about what you want to become and how you want your life to be is necessary. You won’t move forward or change anything unless you have a destination in mind and a plan on how to get there. This is where positive thinking, Dreamboards, Wishbooks and visualization come into play.
The problem is that positive thinking about something is easy.
If that were what it took to change one’s life, millions upon millions of people would live better, fuller lives than they do. People spend lots of time thinking about what they would do if they won the lottery or got a promotion. They daydream and play “what if” in their mind. And that’s where it ends.
The thing is, once you have a destination in mind and an idea of how you want your life to be, you have to figure out how to become the person who accomplishes that end. You can’t just think your way to success. You have to act.
In our business, we have to write the ads, place the ads, write and produce the content. We have to create videos and audios. We have to call people on the phone, find people who have problems we can solve and then offer to provide those solutions. We have to do the work, take the no’s, suffer the defeats and move forward and adjust our actions until we reach the goals we set. We have to be in the arena, getting challenged and bloodied as we go.
Positive thinking helps us to get started.
Without it, we would likely not begin. The danger we face is stopping short of action. Lord knows I’ve done my share of that. Getting ready to get ready. It was only when I put thinking in it’s rightful place and knuckled down to do the work that things started happening in a way that would move me toward the goals I thought about.
I’ll close with a quote Mr. Nightingale used in his recording from Dean Briggs:
“Do your work. Not just your work and no more, but a little more for the lavishing’s sake. That little more which is worth all the rest. And if you suffer as you must, and you doubt as you must, do your work. Put your heart into it and the sky will clear. And then out of your very doubt and suffering will be born the supreme joy of life.”
So do your planning and your positive thinking. Then get in gear and do your work. I believe in your ability to get the deal done and reach your dreams. If there is ever anything I can do to help, hit me up in the comments, or PM me.
I’ll meet you in the arena.
