You have a prospect with whom you’ve had a good qualifying conversation. You then sent them the link to your Play 2 Presentation and agreed on a time to talk afterward. So what do you say if they don’t answer the phone when you call at the agreed upon time? This is the simple 3-step direct sales follow up voicemail system I use every day. Adapt it to your business so that you can be more effective in your direct sales follow up.

Follow Up Step 1

You make your follow up call at the correct time and you get routed to voicemail. Here’s Message Number One:

“Hey Mike, it’s Steve Norris. We were supposed to chat today at 4:00. Sorry I missed you. Hope everything’s OK. Give me a call back at (208) 991-2829.”

Things happen. Life gets in the way of the best plans. You don’t know what’s going on in Mike’s world right now, so you don’t want to have any accusatory tome in your voice. Just keep it neutral and direct and move on.

Follow Up Step 2

You left a message on Mike’s phone yesterday and he hasn’t called you back. You make a second follow up call and again get routed to voicemail. Here’s Message Number Two:

“Hey Mike, it’s Steve Norris. We were supposed to chat yesterday. I haven’t heard back from you. Let me know if this is something you’re interested in. If not, that’s OK, I just don’t want to waste your time or mine. Give me a call at (208) 991-2829.”

Again, keep your tone neutral. Remember, you need people for your business but you don’t need any one person in particular. Also, hurt or angry tones of voice don’t attract people to you.

Follow Up Step 3

Now it’s Day 3 and you still haven’t heard back from Mike. You’ll make one more call. This is Message Number 3, the goodbye message. It goes like this:

“Hey Mike, it’s Steve Norris. I haven’t heard back so I’m guessing this isn’t for you. I’ll go ahead and take you off my list and I won’t bother you about it again. If things change for you and you want to talk about it in the future, you can always reach me at (208) 991-2829.”

And move on to other prospects. Honor your word and don’t call Mike. Also, stay neutral with your tone. You still don’t know what’s happening in Mike’s life right now.

Maybe he blew you off or maybe something urgent did come up. You don’t know. If you stay neutral and professional you leave the door open for Mike to reaach out to you in the future.

That’s the simple direct sales follow up voicemail system I use every day. Tweak it so the language fits you and use it to make yourself more efficient and effective in your follow up.

If you think this system is useful, I’d appreciate it if you shared it out on social media. You can also subscribe to my newsletter so you’ll get more tactics and tools delivered straight to your Inbox.
